Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness is a 2022 American superhero film based on Marvel Comics featuring the character Doctor Strange. Produced by Marvel Studios and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, it is the sequel to Doctor Strange (2016) and the 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). The film was directed by Sam Raimi, written by Michael Waldron, and stars Benedict Cumberbatch as Stephen Strange, alongside Elizabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Benedict Wong, Xochitl Gomez, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Rachel McAdams. In the film, Strange protects America Chavez (Gomez), a teenager capable of travelling the multiverse, from Wanda Maximoff (Olsen).

Marvel is famous for a continuous storyline between each of its films. Fans are always looking for spoilers or easter eggs through previous films so that they can reveal what will be served in the next film.

However, not many people think that this latest phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is really well prepared. While Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige had previously announced that Elizabeth Olsen would star in the Disney+ series WandaVision, he also explained that the events of the show would be linked to Olsen's next appearance as Wanda Maximoff in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.

What Feige didn't reveal - and what Disney carefully hid in its marketing for the film until it was released in theaters - was that Wanda's role in the film was different from her previous films.

In an interview with Variety, Elizabeth Olsen expressed her feelings after learning she would be the main villain in the film.

"I knew I was going to be in "Doctor Strange," but I thought I was going to be, like, in ensemble terms. So at first I thought I was nervous and confused, because I haven't finished WandaVision, but we're almost done."

"And it's been an amazing opportunity to have people win over this woman at WandaVision and feel it, and then, you know, manipulate them into this film, where they can be by her side and then feel conflicted on their own. So I thought. It's a great opportunity," he said.

At the end of WandaVision, Wanda fully accepts her identity as the Scarlet Witch, one of the most powerful magic users in the universe. But he must also release his grip on the city of Westview to free its citizens from mind control.

In doing so, she leaves her children Billy (Julian Hilliard) and Tommy (Jett Klyne), who can only exist in Wanda's spell in Westview.

In the Multiverse of Madness, we learn that the loss of her children - coupled with exposure to Darkhold, a book about dangerous dark magic - has pushed Wanda into a time-consuming fixation to find her way back to her son.

That leads Wanda into a relentless pursuit of America Chavez (Xochitl Gomez), a teenage girl with the power to travel through the multiverse. Wanda wants to take America's power so she can be in a universe where her sons still exist, but that will kill America in the process.

In the hands of master horror director Sam Raimi, Wanda's fight and fury scenes are quite scary to watch.
