Broker and Decision to Leave Diputar saat Cannes Film Festival

Broker and Decision to Leave Diputar saat Cannes Film Festival

The two newest Korean films, Broker and Decision To Leave, will compete at the prestigious world film festival, the Cannes Film Festival, Saturday, 14/5.

At this year's Cannes Film Festival which kicks off next week, two new Korean movie Decision to Leave by renowned director Park Chan-wook and "Broker" by Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda will compete for the best film award for the Palme d'Or.

This is the first time in five years that two Korean titles have been invited to the official competition section since 2017, when Bong Joon-ho's "Okja" and Hong Sang-soo's "The Day After" made the list.

The Korean film industry has high hopes for both films, at least one of the two contenders will be awarded at the world's most prestigious film festival, following Bong Jon-Hoo's black comedy "Parasite" which won the Palme d'Or in the 2019 edition.

Decision to Leave is a mystery romance genre film, which is director Park Chan-woo's first film in six years after the psychological thriller The Handmaiden (2016), which was also invited to the Cannes competition, reported by Thekoreatimes.

This latest Korean film is about a detective who suspects a mysterious widow in a murder case and then becomes attracted to her.
Chinese actress Tang Wei from Lust, Caution (2007) and Korean actor Park Hae-il star in the film.

His return to Cannes has been the talk of the town as two of his three competing appearances at Cannes won a trophy at the festival. Oldboy (2003) received the second highest honor at the Grand Prix and Thirst (2009) received the Jury Award.

The film The Handmaiden did not receive an official prize but was awarded an independent Cannes Film Festival-approved award, the Vulcan Award, which recognizes films from the official Cannes selection with outstanding technical achievements, such as production design and cinematography.

"Many say it's time for the director to get the grand prize," said film critic Yoon Sung-eun. "Cannes tends to recognize films based on realism and social criticism, but Park's films are renowned for their artistic style and mise-en-scenes themselves."

Film Broker was written and directed by Japanese director Hirakazu Koreeda but produced, invested and distributed by Korean companies, including CJ ENM. It stars Korean actors, including Song Kang-ho from the film Parasite.

This is the Cannes-winning director's first Korean-language project on adoption, featuring character relationships formed through a baby box, where people anonymously drop newborn babies they can't raise.

It also marked Koreeda's eighth entry to Cannes, including Shoplifters (2018), winners of that year's Palme d'Or.

Film critics say Film Broker will be in the spotlight not only for its director's global reputation but also for veteran actor Song Kang Ho, who is expected to appear on the Cannes red carpet for the seventh time this year.

He starred in many Cannes-winning projects, including the films Thirst and Parasite, and served as a jury member at Cannes last year.

"Song is one of the most beloved actors by famous filmmakers. Many people say he deserves to win an acting award at Cannes," he said. "But what matters is his role in the film and how much he leads the story. The preferences of the jury are also important."

That is, the two newest Korean films Broker and Decision To Leave will compete at this year's Cannes Film Festival, which will take place next Tuesday to May 28.
